How to Get Rid of Black Mold
Before you start trying to figure out how to get rid of black mold in your home, figure out all the areas that are affected by it. Look closely at all surfaces in moisture-prone areas, and plan on cleaning those surfaces that are nearby to mold-infected spots, even if they don’t look infected themselves.
Next, get rid of the cause of the mold. Most mold takes a combination of light and moisture to grow, so getting rid of moisture is key in making sure that the fungus never comes back to your home again. Install better ventilation in areas like laundry rooms and bathrooms, and put dehumidifiers throughout your basement and other humid areas of your home.
Finally, use a fungus removal technique that suits the area where the mold is found. There are several ways to get rid of this gross problem, but the way you choose will depend largely on where you find the growth.
How to Get Rid of Black Mold Once and For All
Use good, old-fashioned bleach for mold on non-porous and even some porous surfaces. You can dilute about a cup of bleach into a gallon of water, and scrub the surface down with it. This will work well with plastic, wood, and even drywall. Alternatively, you can use a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water, which will work to eliminate the mold but which may not eliminate the leftover stains as well as bleach does.
Tear out or get rid of materials that are irrevocably infected. Most non-porous surfaces won’t fall into this category, but surfaces like wood, drywall, and cloth can become too deeply infected with mold to fix. In this case, you’ll have to get these items out of your home. Re-drywall the bathroom, tear out the carpet, or get rid of the couch. Whatever you do, just be sure you’re getting all the items that are infected beyond the surface.
Consult with a professional if the mold is in areas you can’t reach. Sometimes mold will grow behind drywall or under tiles, and in this case, a professional mold remediation might be necessary. Don’t, however, assume that any little spot of mold needs a professional to remove it, as much mold can be removed by your own efforts.
